The short version: TrustedHouseSitters is the one platform that requires you to be 21. Every other major platform draws the line at 18. If you are under 21 and want to sit on THS, there is a legitimate path through a joint account. There is no upper age limit on house sitting anywhere.
TrustedHouseSitters: 21+
THS is the outlier in the market. Every other major platform requires 18. THS requires 21, and this applies globally to all members regardless of where they live.
The reason is consistency across their international user base. Rather than navigate varying legal definitions of adulthood country by country, THS set a single threshold that covers everyone. One global rule, no exceptions.
If you are under 21 but have a partner, friend, or family member who is 21 or older, the practical approach is to create one account together with the 21+ person as the primary account holder. Include both people in the profile: use a combined name (for example "Konrad and Caro"), add photos of both, and write the bio from the perspective of two people travelling and sitting together. Only the primary account holder needs to be verified for the account to function.
This is how we have operated from the start. Konrad is the primary account holder and is verified. Caro is part of the profile in name, photos, and description. We currently have three sits lined up and have had no issues getting accepted. A well-written profile that presents both people clearly does the work. Homeowners can see who they are letting into their home.
A note on verification history: when we originally joined three years ago, both of us were verified on the account. Since THS introduced the Duo Sitter feature in late 2025, Caro's verification was removed from the account under the new structure. This has not affected our ability to get sits. The profile quality and review history carry more weight with homeowners than the number of verified badges.
The THS Duo Sitter add-on is a separate paid feature for couples who want both people formally verified and the ability to apply for overlapping sits. The key points for 2026:
Overlapping sits: Allows you to apply for sits that overlap by up to 48 hours — useful for back-to-back travel
Verified badges: Both sitters receive a verified tick on the profile
Notifications: Both homeowners receive confirmation emails when an overlapping sit is confirmed
Cost: Approximately $45 per year ($3.75 per month billed annually)
ID requirement: The co-sitter must have a valid passport or driver's licence to complete THS's third-party verification (currently Evident or Onfido). Without qualifying ID, the verified badge will not appear
For anyone under 21, our recommendation is simple: create one account with someone who is 21 or over, write a strong joint profile, go on sits together, and build the history. When you turn 21 you can either rewrite the account to focus on yourself or continue using it the way it is. Either works.
For everything THS offers beyond the age requirement, our TrustedHouseSitters review covers it in detail. Use our 25% discount when you are ready to join. One thing to be aware of in 2026: the Basic and Standard plans both carry a $12 booking fee per confirmed sit on top of the annual membership. If you plan to do several sits a year, the Premium plan (~$194 after discount, no booking fees) may work out better value. Our house sitting sites guide covers the full pricing breakdown.

Every Other Major Platform: 18+
| Platform | Minimum age | Region |
|---|---|---|
| Nomador | 18 (legal adult in country of residence) | France, Europe |
| MindMyHouse | 18 | Global |
| House Carers | 18 | Global |
| Aussie House Sitters | 18 | Australia |
| Kiwi House Sitters | 18 | New Zealand |
| House Sitters Canada | 18 | Canada |
| House Sitters UK | 18 | UK |
| House Sitters America | 18 | USA |
| House Sit Match | 18 | UK/Europe |
| Mindahome AU | 18 | Australia |
| Mindahome UK | 18 | UK |
Nomador is worth highlighting for younger sitters. Rather than setting a fixed global age, Nomador requires users to be of legal adult age under the laws of their country of residence with full legal capacity to enter a contract. In most of Europe that means 18. For any sitter aged 18 to 20 who wants to sit in France, Belgium, or French-speaking Switzerland, Nomador is both accessible and the dominant platform for that region. Our house sitting sites guide has the full platform comparison.
Building a Profile as a Younger Sitter
Being 18 to 20 means you can access most of the market except THS. The practical challenge at any age without reviews is the same: persuading homeowners to trust someone with no track record. For younger sitters, there are two things worth acknowledging directly.
First, some homeowners have a preference for sitters with more life experience. This is not a rule and it does not apply to all homeowners. It is worth being aware of rather than surprised by.
Second, the absence of this preference is equally real. Many homeowners actively seek younger sitters for sits requiring physical energy: active dogs, large properties, gardens, and outdoor animal care. A 19-year-old with a genuine love of animals, a well-written profile, and solid references is competitive for these sits.
The practical strategy for younger sitters is the same as for anyone starting out: begin with shorter, local sits where the barrier to entry is lower, build a review history on the 18+ platforms, and use that track record when you are ready to apply for THS at 21. Our guide to getting sits without prior experience covers exactly how to approach the first application with nothing but a well-written profile and solid references.
Specific animal experience, honest descriptions of your background, and genuine engagement with what the homeowner has described in their listing will outperform a generic profile from a more experienced sitter every time.

Is There an Upper Age Limit?
No. No major platform sets one. This is worth stating clearly because the question comes up, particularly from retirees exploring house sitting for the first time.
Homeowners select sitters on the basis of profile, reviews, communication, and fit with the sit's requirements. A sitter in their 60s or 70s with a strong review history and the physical capability for the specific sit is as competitive as anyone else.
What matters for older sitters is accurate matching between physical capability and the sit's demands. A sit with three large active dogs requiring multiple long walks daily is different from a sit with two indoor cats. Selecting sits that actually match your energy levels, and being upfront about this in your profile, is the foundation of a sustainable long-term sitting practice.
One practical advantage that older sitters underuse: if you are or have been a homeowner yourself, say so in your bio. Homeowners respond strongly to knowing that the person watching their property understands what a burst pipe means, why a garden left untended for three weeks becomes a problem, and how a home should be left when you depart. That lived understanding is a genuine differentiator and worth making explicit in the profile. Our guide for senior house sitters covers how to position this and other advantages in more detail.
Our First Sit
Konrad was 35 and Caro was 23 when we did our first sit in Bochum in June 2023. Konrad had searched Google for house sits in Bochum and found a listing that had just gone live: two cats, two weeks, five minutes from Caro's family home. The membership cost around €97 after a discount. We applied, had a video call with the homeowner, and got it.
There was nothing about our age that made the application harder or easier. What the homeowner responded to was a profile that was specific, honest, and showed genuine interest in the cats and the home. That is the same thing that makes any application succeed at any age. Our full getting started guide begins with that first sit.
Conclusion
The age landscape is simple. THS requires 21, everyone else requires 18, and no one sets an upper limit. If you are between 18 and 20, the entire market except THS is open to you, and THS is accessible via a joint account with someone who is 21. If you are over 21, nothing blocks you on any platform.
Start with TrustedHouseSitters using our 25% discount if you are 21 or older, or with Nomador, MindMyHouse, or your regional platform if you are 18 to 20.

Frequently Asked Questions
How old do you have to be to house sit on TrustedHouseSitters?
21. This applies globally to all members regardless of country of residence. If you are under 21, the legitimate path is to join as a co-sitter on an account held by someone who is 21 or older.
Can an 18-year-old house sit?
Yes, on most major platforms. Nomador, MindMyHouse, House Carers, Aussie House Sitters, Kiwi House Sitters, House Sitters Canada, House Sitters UK, and House Sitters America all accept sitters from age 18. TrustedHouseSitters is the only major platform that requires 21.
Is there an age limit to stop house sitting?
No platform sets an upper age limit. Homeowners select sitters based on profile, reviews, communication, and fit with the sit's requirements. Physical capability matters for sits with demanding animal care, but that is about choosing sits that match your ability rather than any age restriction imposed by platforms.
What if I am under 21 and want to use TrustedHouseSitters?
Join as a co-sitter on an account held by a partner, friend, or family member who is 21 or older. Both people go through ID verification. You apply together and build reviews together. Once you turn 21, you can create your own account.
Which platform is best for sitters aged 18 to 20?
Nomador is the best starting platform for European-based young sitters, particularly for sits in France or French-speaking Europe where Nomador has the most listings. Globally, MindMyHouse ($29/year) and House Carers are accessible budget options. Your regional platform (Aussie House Sitters, Kiwi House Sitters, House Sitters Canada) is the right first choice for local sits.
